This has to be one of my favorite street portraits in a while, mostly because of my experience in taking it. I was walking around in Denver and saw this guy, and thought he had an interesting look. I asked if I could take his photo. He slowly rolled his head, looked me up and down, and nodded. As I took the shot, he blew out some smoke and got my first true look at his eye(s) and tattoos. I thanked him, and again, he just looked at me and nodded. As I was about to leave, he did ask a question: "You smoke?" There was just something very raw about this meeting, and when I got my negs back, the shot was special to me for some reason. And for those of you wondering about the tear tattoos: They often signify that the individual has killed another person, particularly while in prison, or that a family member, friend, or fellow gang member has died or been killed (
