I recently saw Mark Romanek's music video of Jay-Z's '99 Problems'. Just wonderful, and Joaquin Baca Asay's cinematography is mind-blowing. The look of high-contrast black and white film set around Brooklyn's Marcy projects is something to behold. It's a style I wanted to adapt... Some days ago, I was walking around taking some photos. All of a sudden, a man with an eye patch comes screaming, "Ain't nobody can be like Elvis, son! Nobody! Now take my fucking picture!" And so I did. A few in fact. I was startled, but took the shots (which I secretly wanted to take anyway). All of a sudden, he starts running off, as if someone was chasing him. I yelled, "Umm... Thanks! What's your name?" He screamed, "It's Elvis, son. Ain't you been listening!?" And that was that. One of the strangest photographic encounters I've ever had, but when I got the film back, I was happy. Not quite Baca Asay's work, but it's a step...
